in a nutshell...
Who is
Karli Jean Lonnquist?
I am a multidisciplinary theatre artist from Portland, Oregon, with 12 years of professional and educational experience in the performing arts. After my mom encouraged a bright six-year-old me to audition for a play (rather against my will, at the time) because my energy "needed to go somewhere", I fell deeply in love with theatre. Since then, I have performed at theatres all across Portland, and am now making my way in the Los Angeles performing arts industry. In addition to performance, I am a director, dramaturg and playwright! My playwriting combines macabre surrealism and absurdism with poetic whimsy in order to highlight the struggles of young people. Furthermore, I have become passionate about amplifying the voices of both teens and people with disabilities in the arts and strive to provide interdisciplinary theatrical training and performance opportunities for both of these populations. When not onstage or offstage, you can find me studying to earn double B.A in Theatre with an area of study in Dramaturgy, Playwriting and Literary Management as well as a B.A in Peace Studies with an area of study in Interfaith Relations at Chapman University, baking cakes for customers of my cake business, KJ's Cakery, listening to The Magnus Archives, and/or actively consuming ramen!

Playwriting Videos
Watch a staged reading of my play, Gloaming...
Gloaming was first produced as a staged reading in the Fertile Ground Festival through Lakewood Theatre Company in their Young Playwright's Festival. YPF is a collection of one-act plays by high school playwrights from the Portland metro area who have been selected to work with professional directors, actors, and playwrights to gain insight, experience, and feedback to develop their plays. YPF provides an opportunity for these playwrights to learn and discover how to hone their playwriting skills through a series of workshops with theatre professionals. The culmination of this process is to experience the audience’s response at this presentation of their work. The above video contains Gloaming and the other four complete one-acts developed through YPF 2022.
Watch the 2020 World Premiere of my play,
lemongrass, honey, whiskey...
lemongrass, honey, whiskey... was first produced by the Young Professional's Company in Breaking Character: Frames of Mind, where seven one-person plays were presented and performed by the artists who wrote them. Each piece was developed in collaboration with Matthew B. Zrebski, Director/Dramaturg. The above video contains Karli Jean Lonnquist's full performance of lemongrass, honey, whiskey...

This piece is especially close to my heart, as it is the first play I wrote and had produced. Without this project and the wonderful individuals behind it, I would not be the artist I am today.
My Philosophy
Theatre is the study of the human condition, which is grounded in empathy. Thus, I approach all of my art with love and compassion held close and strive to create theatre that cultivates connection, opening the hearts of audience members to the perspectives and lived experiences of others. Theatre makes us better people at our cores; through my theatrical artistry, I have devoted myself to becoming the best, most loving human being I can be at any given moment. I will spend my life continuing that journey.
